Unlocking the bootloader is the primary step in most of the rooting procedures. Unlocked bootloaders also enables users to flash custom ROMs/Kernels. Unlocking the bootloader will no longer be an issue for Sony Xperia Ion users, the company has officially released a method to unlock the bootloader of the device. This methods has been posted at XDA by senior member  Spectre51 and it is not the end Spectre51 has also posted a bootloader re-lock tool for the device.

Before giving a try for the unlock method, make sure whether it is possible to unlock the bootloader of your device. It can be done by checking the service menu, open the phone dial pad and enter *#*#7378423#*#* which will open you to service menu.Then in your device tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status, If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can unlock your device. If it says No, sorry you cannot.

This unlock guide will not work for CDMA phones and users with unlocked bootloaders have got problems while accepting over the air upgrades.

Below we have the guide to unlock the bootloader of Sony Xperia Ion

You’ll need to make the following preparations before beginning the unlock procedures

  • Get the IMEI code for your device by typing *#06# in phone dialer.
  • Download the fastboot package with usb drivers.
  • A windows PC.
  • Power down your phone and keeping the Volume Up button pressed, connect the device to your PC via USB cable, this will trigger FASTBOOT mode and windows will start driver installation, extract the above package and point the driver install to that location (usb_driver) folder.
  • Once the driver installation is complete, disconnect the device from the cable and power it on.

Follow the steps below to get the bootloader unlocked

  • Go to the official website of Sony, have a detailed look at the things specified and click Start Unlocking the Bootloader at the bottom of the page which will take you to another page.
  • Make sure that your device can be unlocked, if Yes, hit the Continue button at the bottom of the page.
  • You will get “Are you sure prompt” accept it by clicking yes i am sure.
  • Accept the “legal terms”.
  • At last you’ll have a “Create Unlock request” page where you’ll have to enter your IMEI, name and email address.
  • Then you’ll receive your unique unlock key.
  • Extract fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar and open fastboot folder
  • Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder.
  • Select Open command window here.
  •  Turn phone off the device, hold Volume UP button and plug in USB (fastboot mode).
  • Type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version in the cmd windows.
  • If a value is returned (it will return 0.5), it means the phone is correctly connected.
  • Type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY and replace KEY with the key which you received earlier.

Congrats! you have unlocked the bootloader of your device.

Now we shall move into the re-lock method which Spectre51 has posted. This is not a difficult method and can be easily done even by a beginner.

Re-locking the bootloader is equally important as it allows you to get latest updates and repair the device using SEUS/PCC.

  • Here we have the instructions to re-lock the bootloader of the device
  • Make sure that you have the flashtool download & installed.
  • Then download this FTF: LT28-ION_Relock_bootloader_Dogsly-TEST.ftf // Mirror 1
  • Flash the FTF via FlashTool: When it says enter flashmode, power down device and keeping VOLUME DOWN button pressed connect usb cable to phone, the device will now enter flashmode.
  • Reboot the phone once the flashing is completed.

Now you have the bootloader re-locked.
